Over the rainbow: the olympic parallel society

A short summary of a twitter conversation which has started right after the homophobic comments made by Olympic pole vault champion and IOC’s official ambassador for the Youth Olympic Games 2010, Yelena Isinbayeva, in Moscow.

Isinbayeva will be Mayor of the Athlete’s Village at the Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi, Russia, in a country with a new anti-gay-law.

Of course one has to accept a freedom of opinion for Isinbayeva. What did she say?

Read, for example, Mike Rowbottom at Inside the Games:

„We consider ourselves as standard people – women live with boys, boys live with women.“

„Of course, I don’t support this boycott and I’m also against this polemic,“ she said.

„I feel sorry that they try to involve the athletes into this problem.“

„Everyone can participate, everyone can compete, but of course, we are against promoting such a relationship in the street.

„It won’t be respectful to our citizen.

„We are against the publicity not against the choice of every single person.

„I support our Government.“

This is her opinion, probably. Read other opinions – and facts.

I am sorry, I missed a question mark at the end of this tweet. Did I?

Simply unbelievable.

  1. Die Charta, also bitte! Rule no. 50 (?).

  2. Not so sure about the „parallel society“ here anymore ;) IOC goes too well with certain societies …
Now with a society, which is demonizing it’s own citizens, and making them the scapegoats for Russia’s problems. So does Isinbayeva:

… we are very afraid about our nation …

Would another interntional NGO tolerate or support this type of homophobia?

  5. Thanks for posting this, Jens. Immensely important. I’d like to quote Stephen Fry who calls for a boycott of Sochi:

  6. btw – I’m not for a boycott. Just voting for demonstrating solidarity with the Russian LGBT-community during the Games.

But I must admit: Fry’s idea to exclude Russia from the Sochi-Games (like South Africa was because of Apartheid) is very charming …
