Olympia meint es ja nicht immer gut mit Tieren. Gedopte Pferde (Peking 2008), gebratene Friedenstauben (Seoul 1988/ab 4:40 im Video), das sind so die Schlagzeilen.

Seither müssen keine Tauben mehr bei Eröffnungsfeiern ins Verderben fliegen.

Nicht dass sich Olympia und die Tiere am Ende noch versöhnen. Das wäre doch mal ein Thema, über das Journalisten berichten sollten. G. wird dazu allerdings schweigen. G. ist ein stiller Genießer. Er bevorzugt auch in seiner Arbeit die leisen Töne und meint, wenn ich ab und an im Blog ein Foto veröffentliche, müsse das reichen. Er wolle seine Beziehung  nicht öffentlich besprechen. Das kann ich verstehen und respektieren.

18.50 Uhr: Lassen wir also den bisherigen Tag Revue passieren. Mich haben besonders die Auftritte der Olympiabewerber 2018 interessiert, was an anderer Stelle kurz angerissen wurde.

Annecy konnte ich leider nicht sehen. Allgemeines Urteil derjenigen, die ich dazu befragt habe:  Dürftig. Aber die gesamte Bewerbung ist nicht ernst zu nehmen. Geredet wurde viel über das IOC-Mitglied Jean-Claude Killy – blöd nur, dass Killy durch Abwesenheit glänzte. Guy Drut, ein weiteres französisches IOC-Mitglied, fehlte ebenfalls, tauchte zwei Stunden später aber als Gast in der PK von Pyeongchang auf. Was das wohl bedeutet?

“We chose the date for 2018 Olympic during February and this is the best conditions we can have in the winter. For sure not every day is sunny with big powder snow but if you take (this) Saturday and Sunday, it was great sunshine and the snow was very good over there.

“For sure we are going to work with the water to make artificial snow also. But the weather is the only thing we cannot totally control. The French Alps for a long time there are good conditions in winter for skiing and I think the place is good for that.”

On existing facilities and infrastructure:

“It is 65 percent of the sites that are ready.”

“We will use the infrastructure in La Plagne in Savoie, which is in the heart of the Alps. We will use the airport in Geneva and the highways of Geneva. Geneva is 30 km, 40 minutes from Annecy. Of course we have an agreement with Geneva, which is our neighbour. But it remains a National French bid, as the rules require.”

On the venues they need to build:

“The big project is to build the speed skating oval because we don’t have one in France.”

“This will be the remaining legacy.”

“The French federation is in favour of this.”

“(But) at La Clusaz there will be no construction of the (ski) jumps because it is a natural slope, what is important is that they will already be inscribed in nature.”

Vancouver, 15 February 2010 – The German speed skater Claudia Pechstein has filed an application at the ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) and the International Olympic Committee. In her application, Ms Pechstein requests that she be nominated for and allowed to participate in the female speed skating competitions of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The application of Ms Pechstein is being transmitted to the Respondents DOSB and IOC. In the meantime, the CAS will not comment any further on this matter.

So strahlten Sie um die Wette, die Bittsteller aus München, von links: Bundesinnenminister Thomas de Maizière (CDU), Thomas Bach (FDP, IOC, DOSB), Willy Bogner, Katarina Witt (ARD). Christian Ude (SPD), Siegfried Schneider (CSU). Ich fand ja, der eindeutig beste Spruch kam vom UDIOCM, den habe ich weiter unten gefettet – umweltpolitisch ist Bachs Aussage nicht unbedingt das smarteste, was er sagen konnte, aber es war schlagfertig.

Nachtrag, einen Tag später: Christian Ude sah sich zu einer Richtigstellung seiner Aussagen gezwungen.

Das muss die Kati noch lernen. Sie hat keine 171 Freunde auf Facebook, sondern Fans, denn sie hat eine Fanseite eingerichtet. Habe mich gerade als 195. Fan bei ihr gemeldet.

Irritierend fand ich, dass Katarina Witt als letzte von Bogner vorgestellt wurde, und auch als letzte die Journalisten begrüßte. Die Rolle der Conférencieuse hätte der Witt zugestanden, ich glaube, sie hätte das auch lässiger erledigt als Bogner, dessen Charme mir verborgen blieb. Bach, Ude, de Maizière hatten ihre Lektionen gelernt, wenngleich Ude sicher seine Behauptung erklären muss, es habe auf dem Oktoberfest nie größere Zwischenfälle gegeben. Ich habe George Hirthler aus Atlanta, der die PK arrangiert hat, gefragt, warum die Witt nicht durchs Programm führte. Aber er fand das so in Ordnung. Das Beste zuletzt, meinte er. Was soll er auch auf so eine dumme Frage sagen: Etwa, dass er einen Fehler gemacht hat?

19.56 Uhr: Bevor ich zu Pyeongchang komme, noch ein kurzer Einschub. Denn inzwischen sitze ich im Pacific Coliseum – links neben mir ein Chinese, der noch mehr Knoblauch konsumiert hat, als ich an wilden Tagen, rechts jubelnde russische Reporter – und schaue mir die Paarlauf-Entscheidung an. Wen traf ich hier wohl als erstes?

Don Juan Antonio Samaranch mit seiner Ewig-Sekretärin Annie. Ich habe ihn schon vermisst, den Patron. Muss unbedingt regelmäßiger im Westin Bayshore vorbei schauen. Gerade fragt mich Bernhard Schwank, Chef de Mission der Deutschen und München 2018 Geschäftsführer, ob Sawtschenko/Szolkowy es wohl schaffen. Woher soll ich das wissen. Wahrheitsgemäß vermutungsgemäß sagte ich: nein.

20.24 Uhr: Kurz vor der Paarlauf-Entscheidung noch schnell das – wie immer unvollständige und in diesem Fall um die putzigen Passagen (Korruption? 20.31 Uhr: Tut mir leid. Aber der Strauchler von Szolkowy hat’s wohl entschieden.

Ich gestehe meine Schwäche. Aber Eiskunstlaufen, Paarlaufen und Eistanz vor allem, auf diesem Niveau ist was fürs Herz. Schöne Schnulze, toll gelaufen. Gänsehaut, das erste Mal in Vancouver.

Meine persönliche Nummer eins aller Zeiten (vor der 88er Carmen): Marina Klimowa und Sergej Ponomarenko 1992 in Albertville!

Die Chinesen Pang/Tong waren perfekt. Haben das Publikum, aber nicht mich mitgerissen. Jetzt noch Shen Xue und Zhao Hongbo. Großartig. Ich glaube, in meinem zweiten Leben werde ich doch Eiskunstlaufberichterstatter und nicht Sportfunktionär. Zuletzt war ich vor acht Jahren dabei, bei Kwan vs. Slutskaja. Ich meine, beim Eiskunstlaufen hat man so ziemlich alles: Herzschmerz, Liebe, Leiden, Korruption, die Mafia.

Und noch ein Jubiläum, drei Tage nach dem zehnten Todestag von Flo Jo: Am 24. September 1988 – am Tag, als Kristin Otto ihre fünfte von sechs Goldmedaillen gewann - raste Benjamin Sinclair “Ben” Johnson in Seoul 9,79 Sekunden. Kurz darauf war er seine Goldplakette wieder los. Da kann der Witz-Bolt noch so schnell rennen, da kann The Big M noch so oft gewinnen: Der 100-Meter-Lauf am 24. September 1988 in Seoul bleibt die spektakulärste Entscheidung der olympischen Geschichte – und Big Ben, heute 46 Jahre alt und Opa, der bekannteste Betrüger aller Zeiten. Das Ergebnisprotokoll:

Hier der Lauf, zwar mit stotterndem finnischen Kommentar, dafür aber mit dem besten Bild, das ich auf Youtube dazu gefunden habe:

Ben Johnson (sehr guter Wikipedia-Eintrag mit all den Wirren der Johnson-Karriere, um Längen besser als die deutsche Version) und sein damaliger Trainer Charlie Francis, der später auch mal Marion Jones coachte, stricken bis heute Verschwörungstheorien um den positiven Dopingtest. Sie haben mit allem möglichen Zeug gedopt, angeblich nur nicht mit Stanozolol. “Wäre alles so gekommen, wenn Ben Amerikaner gewesen wäre?” fragt Charlie Francis gern. Wahrscheinlich nicht. Schließlich hatte Carl Lewis, wie etliche andere Amis auch, bei den Trials ein paar Wochen zuvor in Indianapolis, eine positive Probe. Doch die Fälle wurden vom Verband USATF und vom USOC vertuscht, wie so oft.

Von den acht Finalisten damals in Seoul sind nur der Brasilianer Robson da Silva und der Amerikaner Calvin Smith, ehemals Weltrekordler, nie positiv getestet worden. Was letztlich auch nichts besagt. Außer Johnson wurden im Laufe der Jahre erwischt:

• Carl Lewis (vertuschte Probe 1988, wahrscheinlich auch schon 1984 und wahrscheinlich auch später, denn er rannte und sprang ja bis 1996),
• Dennis Mitchell (der brachte mal die legendäre Begründung, zu viel Bier und Sex hätten seinen Testosteron-Spiegel ansteigen lassen: “The lady deserved a treatment!”),
• Desai Williams (wurde von Francis gedopt, hat vor der Dubin-Untersuchungskommission munter geplaudert),
• Linford Christie (Pseudoephedrine 1988 nach den 200 Metern, Nandrolon-Sperre 1999),
• Raymond Stewart (hatte 1987 eine auffällige Probe).

Dieser Tage soll Johnsons Autobiografie “Seoul to Soul” erscheinen. Er wird darin all seine Geschichten noch einmal erzählen. Und er wird wiederholen, was er immer sagt (zum Beispiel in diesem Interview bei 7:30 min):

“I don’t regret.”

Alle tauchen sie in “Seoul to Soul” auf: Doping-Coach Charlie Francis, Doping-Arzt Jamie Astaphan, Doping-Masseur Waldemar Matuszewski, sein Agent Larry Heidebrecht, seine Mit-Doper wie Angella Issajenko, die wie Johnson aus Jamaika stammt und in ihrer Biografie “Running Risks” schon 1990 ein Buch vorgelegt hat, dass ich für eines der wichtigsten, nun ja, Drogen-Aufklärungsbücher halte, weil es in wunderbarer Weise die verkommenen Strukturen, die Gier, die Brutalität und die Seelenlosigkeit dieses Drecksgeschäfts Showsport beschreibt. An den Strukturen hat sich, Wada hin oder her, bis heute nichts grundlegend geändert. Und, nicht zu vergessen: zum System Johnson gehörten auch Verbandsfunktionäre. Der damalige Präsident der Canadian Track and Field Association etwa, Jean-Guy Ouellette, hatte gern bei europäischen Meetingorganisatoren angerufen und sich nach den Dopingkontrollen erkundigt. Die Infos gab er sofort an Charlie Francis weiter. Jean-Guy Ouellette ist derzeit wieder Boss (Chairman of the Board of Directors) des Verbandes, der jetzt Athletics Canada heißt. So etwas nennt man wohl olympische Kontinuität. Und das, obwohl Ouellette, wie viele andere, im Bericht des Richters Charles Dubin, der an 91 öffentlichen Anhörungen zwischen 1988 und 1989 insgesamt 122 Zeugen zum Fall Johnson vernahm, als Mittäter bloß gestellt wurde.

Ouellette ist nur ein Beispiel von vielen.

Den Dubin-Report kann ich leider nicht als pdf hochladen, hier nur mal eine Summary desselben (44 Seiten, pdf, 1,2 MB) von Dick Moriarty: Legislation and Litigation Resulting from the Canadian Commission of Inquiry into the Use of Drugs and Banned Practices Intended To Increase Athletic Performance. Wer sich das antun will: niemand wird dümmer dabei.

Ich habe für diesen kleinen Beitrag auch in den Büchern von Issajenko, Richard Pound und Brigitte Berendonk nachgelesen. Sehr frustrierend. Zum Thema Verlogenheit und Sportjournalismus noch flink zwei TV-Empfehlungen von der Webseite der Canadian Broadcasting Corporation:

1) Eine Jubel-Prosa auf Ben Johnson (“Built for speed”) vom Mai 1987, in der auch diverse so genannte Sportwissenschaftler (ein Problem für sich, weltweit) ihren Unsinn zur “ultimate running machine” absondern dürfen – und Charlie Francis sagt: “This is purely physical!”

2) Als die positive Probe dann da ist, schwenken die TV-Reporter um und aus der “ultimate running machine” wird im September 1988 plötzlich: “Canada’s shame”.

Man muss Florence Griffith-Joyner, die heute vor zehn Jahren gestorben ist und deren Rechteverwalter diese Webseite betreiben, gewiss nicht so in Erinnerung behalten wie Ihr Ehemann Al Joyner. Man darf zurecht zweifeln. Nicht nur an der Windmessung damals, im Juli 1988, in Indianapolis:

Bei den Trials im Juli 1988 schockte sie die Welt. Bei den Olympischen Spielen in Seoul im September schockte sie niemanden mehr. Seither ist Flo Jo Weltrekordlerin über 100 Meter, 200 Meter, sie ist dreifache Olympiasiegerin – und kein Titel, kein Rekord wird ihr je genommen werden. Leider.

Die Kollegen vom IOC-Sponsor “Sports Illustrated” haben die Wundergeschichte damals so aufgeschrieben:

• 25.07.1988: Getup and Go
• 14.09.2008: Very Fancy, Very Fast
• 03.10.1988: Go, Flo, Go

Wie schnell aus einer, die nur mit rennt, eine werden kann, die weit voraus rennt, haben auch andere bewiesen – aber nie zuvor und nie danach so eklatant wie Flo Jo. Wie schnell und nachhaltig Dopingmittel wirken, hat kaum jemand so eindrücklich beschrieben wie Kelli White, eine, die einst auch nur mit rannte, dann aber plötzlich, im August 2003, weit voraus rannte. “It was too easy”, sagte Kelli White Jahre später, als alle Welt die Fakten über den Balco-Skandal und ihre Drogenkuren erfahren hatte. Als sie im August 2003 in Paris als Weltmeisterin – erst über 100, dann über 200 Meter – von der Bahn ging, hat sie sich schuldig gefühlt, sagte Kelli White. Diese Passage (ab 2:38 min) aus der ABC-Dokumentation “Catch me, if you can” ist sehr zu empfehlen:

In diesem Zusammenhang will ich für das Interview mit Balian Buschbaum (“Ich kam mir vor wie ein Pitbull”) von Anno Hecker und Daniel Meuren aus der heutigen FAS unbedingt einen Lesebefehl aussprechen.
