JOHANNESBURG. Auf der Soccerex hat FIFA-Präsident Joseph Blatter heute noch einen Witz versucht. Frei wiedergeben hat er geplaudert, die ehemaligen europäischen Kolonialmächte – er nannte England, Belgien, Spanien und Frankreich – werden sich im kommenden Jahr schon noch wundern, wozu Afrika fähig sei. Blatter scheut keine noch so billige Stimmungsmache um sich als allafrikanischer Held, Bewahrer des Fairplay, Volldemokrat, Hüter des Weltfriedens und Retter der Menschheit aufzuspielen. Was ich vergangene Woche leider übersehen habe, trage ich nun nach: Die FIFA organisiert derzeit gemeinsam mit Coca-Cola, einem ihrer langjährigen Hauptsponsoren, die “World Cup Trophy Tour“. Vergangenen Donnerstag kam der FIFA-Weltpokal, sponsored by Coca-Cola, auch in Simbabwes Hauptstadt Harare vorbei. Einziger Simbabwer, der den World Cup liften durfte, war …

Fans enjoy World Cup show

SOME people came on buses, others on cars, a few in lorries but the majority used public transport into the city centre, and then completed the journey on foot to the Harare International Conference Centre, for a date with the iconic Fifa World Cup trophy.

The trophy arrived in Zimbabwe on Thursday night with President Mugabe being the only Zimbabwean citizen handling the solid gold at a glamorous ceremony at the Harare International Airport.

President Mugabe was also the first Zimbabwean to have his photo taken with the World Cup Trophy before senior Government officials, led by Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara, got as close as possible, but without touching the Trophy.

The President and the First Family were at the Harare International Airport to receive the World Cup Trophy.

Yesterday fans went to the HICC with many hopeful of catching a glimpse of the Trophy and, for the lucky ones, getting a photo opportunity with the trophy in its glass box.

It was truly a carnival atmosphere with Zimbabweans from different races, colours, cultural backgrounds, ages and professions hoping for that photo with the one and only authentic Fifa World Cup. (…)
