The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today released the report by the Evaluation Commission for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in 2018. This report follows the Commission’s visits to the three Candidate Cities bidding to host the Games: Munich (Germany), Annecy (France) and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea).*

The Evaluation Commission, chaired by the IOC member in Sweden Gunilla Lindberg, spent four days in each Candidate City earlier this year (see dates below) to conduct on-site inspections and carry out an assessment of the cities’ 2018 Olympic Winter Games projects.

The report is a technical analysis which is being provided to IOC members prior to the “2018 Briefing for IOC Members” which will be held on 18 and 19 May in Lausanne. During this meeting the Candidate Cities will have the opportunity to present the technical aspects of their candidatures to the IOC members and answer questions.

The election of the host city of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games will take place on 6 July 2011 during the 123rd IOC Session in Durban (South Africa). Prior to the IOC members casting their votes, the Candidate Cities will make their final presentations, followed by a final report by Evaluation Commission Chair Gunilla Lindberg. The city that obtains an absolute majority of votes will be elected.

The election in Durban will be the culmination of a process that began on 31 July 2009, when the IOC asked National Olympic Committees to nominate cities for the 2018 Games. On 16 October 2009, the IOC announced Munich, Annecy and PyeongChang as the three Applicant Cities. The cities’ responses to the IOC’s Applicant City Questionnaire were studied by an IOC Working Group, which produced a report for the IOC Executive Board (EB). Based on this report, all three cities were named Candidate Cities by the EB at its meeting on 22 June 2010. The cities submitted their Candidature Files, based on the 17 themes outlined in the IOC’s Candidature Procedure and Questionnaire, by the deadline of 11 January 2011.

* Cities are listed in the order of drawing of lots as performed by the IOC Executive Board on 10 December 2009. This is the order in which the cities bidding for the 2018 Games will be listed, make presentations, etc., until the election of the host city in July 2011.

Anyway, in den diplomatischen Rang eines Staatsgastes wird demnächst in Deutschland die schwedische Berufsfunktionärin Gunilla Lindberg erhoben: Sie wurde von IOC-Präsident Jacques Rogge dazu auserkoren, die Evaluierungskommission 2018 zu leiten.

IOC announces composition of Evaluation Commission for 2018 Winter Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today that Swedish IOC member Gunilla Lindberg will chair an 11-member Evaluation Commission tasked with making a comprehensive technical appraisal of the three Candidate Cities bidding to host the 2018 Olympic Winter Games: Munich (Germany), Annecy (France) and PyeongChang (South Korea).*

The Evaluation Commission is composed of representatives of the Olympic Movement as well as a number of advisors, and enjoys full continental representation.

Lindberg, a member of the IOC Executive Board from 2000 to 2004 and IOC Vice-President from 2004 to 2008, is vastly experienced from her time spent on Coordination Commissions for five Olympic Games and her work with the Evaluation Commission for the 2006 Turin Olympic Winter Games.

The 2018 Evaluation Commission will analyse the candidature files before making on-site inspections of the cities between 8 February and 5 March 2011. The Commission will issue its report for IOC members ahead of the election of the host city on 6 July 2011, during the 122nd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa.

“The Evaluation Commission will be well-served by the appointment of Gunilla Lindberg as its Chair,� said IOC President Jacques Rogge. “Ms Lindberg has extensive knowledge of what it takes to host an Olympic Games, in particular a Winter Games, and possesses all the skills necessary to lead our team of experts and make the best possible analyses of the three Candidate Cities.�

Commenting on her appointment, Lindberg said: “It is a great honour for me to have been chosen to head such an important commission within the IOC. I very much look forward to working with my highly qualified colleagues in evaluating the bids from three excellent Candidate Cities.�

Representatives from Munich, Annecy and PyeongChang will give presentations to all IOC members during a technical meeting scheduled for next May in Lausanne. The Evaluation Commission’s report will coincide with this meeting.

Ich denke mal, in diese Lage wird das UDIOCM (FDP) nie wieder kommen. Thomas Bach (Zweiter von links/Screenshot IOC-TV) hat gerade dieses Wahlprotokoll unterschrieben, obgleich es doch viel spannender gewesen wäre, wenn einer – er zum Beispiel – gegen den Alleinkandidaten angetreten wäre:

IOC-Präsident Jacques Rogge mochte seine zweite Amtszeit nicht per Akklamation antreten. Er bestand auf einer Abstimmung. Und so wird er, der im Juli 2001 am 81. Geburtstag seines Vorgängers Samaranch zum ersten Mal gewählt wurde, nun bis 2013 als IOC-Chef amtieren.

Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand van Oranje-Nassau, Prinz von Oranien, Prinz der Niederlande, Prinz von Oranien-Nassau, Herr von Amsberg kam heute übrigens zu spät zur Präsidialwahl. Er entschuldigte sich öffentlich, sagte, er sei gestern zu früh verschwunden, weshalb er nicht mitbekommen habe, dass es heute schon um 8.30 Uhr beginnt und nicht erst um 9 Uhr wie an den anderen Tagen. Er kam erst, als Rogge schon bestätigt war. “Der Präsident hätte meine Stimme bekommen”, sagte Willem-Alexander. Peinlich zwar, die Nummer, aber er steht zu seinen kleinen Schwächen.

Und hier, nur so, zwei Kameraden, die doch ebenfalls als Stammgäste bezeichnet werden können in diesem Theater: Hassan Moustafaund sein Boss Scheich Al-Sabah. Bestimmt haben sie die Raucherpause genutzt, um über Ethikfragen zu debattieren:

13.43 Uhr: GOLF und RUGBY-seven sind olympisch. Golf mit 63:27 Stimmen. Die Rugby-Variante mit sieben Spielern kommt mit 81:8 Stimmen durch.
